The best foods rich in calcium: keep your bones healthy

Calcium is one of the most important minerals in our body, since after fats, proteins and of course water, it is the most present component in our body.

It’s most important function is to maintain healthy and strong bones and teeth, so finding and consuming foods rich in calcium that keep our levels of this mineral high is undoubtedly a priority.

What foods are rich in calcium?

Many of us think directly of milk and its derivatives, however, there are other foods rich in calcium that we should know about:

–  Cow’s milk, yes, but also  soy or rice milk . The grinding and cooking of the grains from which they are obtained provide up to 300mg of calcium for each cup of milk.

–  Sardines or sardines in oil . This oily fish, rich in Omega 3 and vitamins A, D and E, contains large amounts of calcium, especially in its spine, making it a fantastic food for those with a calcium deficiency.

– Cruciferous vegetables, ie broccoli, kale or cabbage are incredible sources of plant-based calcium.

–  Spinach, and green vegetables in general, contain up to 200mg of calcium, which is really interesting especially for vegetarians or vegans who do not get calcium from animal sources.

– Nuts such as almonds, hazelnuts or dried figs contain a large amount of calcium, which makes them a rich and nutritious snack.

However, it will be useless to consume foods rich in calcium if we have a vitamin D deficiency, responsible for the correct absorption of calcium in our body; or if we abuse alcohol and coffee, drinks that directly interfere with its assimilation.

Thus, knowing foods rich in calcium beyond milk, yogurt and cheese, we have no excuse for not keeping our bones and teeth well cared for.
