First symptoms of diabetes: How to recognize if you are diabetic

Diabetes is a metabolic disease characterized by  higher than normal blood sugar levels. This is caused by a failure in the production or action of insulin. If not properly controlled, in the long term, cause alterations in the kidneys, heart or eyes.

Hence the importance of being attentive to those first symptoms of diabetes that will help you recognize if you are diabetic.

Types of diabetes

There are two main types of diabetes:

Type 1 , which is one of the chronic childhood diseases and is caused by a genetic factor, that is, a relative has the disease and it is inherited or due to autoimmunity. In it, the pancreas does not produce enough insulin.

Type 2, more common in older people. In this case, the ability to produce insulin does not disappear, but the body is resistant to this hormone. It can also be hereditary, although most people suffer from it due to their lifestyle: unhealthy eating, people with excess weight or a sedentary lifestyle, for example.

In this last cause,  the role of prevention is essential. That is why it is important to control our weight, stay active with regular exercise for at least 30 minutes a day (this will lower our glucose levels), take care of our diet and eat in a healthy way, rest and let the body recover by sleeping well. .

These are the first symptoms of diabetes

For a diabetic to control their sugar levels is essential. But for this you must first know that you are diabetic. It is a very reasonable statement that, sometimes, is not fulfilled. A percentage of those who suffer from this disease have no information, awareness about it or are unaware that they have it and it is very dangerous.

To avoid this, there are symptoms that we can identify to recognize if we have diabetes. We must be clear that we cannot self-diagnose it and that the ideal person to do so is a doctor. He will verify if we suffer from the disease or if we suffer from another type of pathology, but if the symptoms are met, perhaps we can go to the doctor with some idea of what we could have.

The first thing you should know is that in the case of type 1 diabetes, the symptoms tend to manifest more clearly, but in the case of type 2 diabetes, detection is usually more complicated since the symptoms can take years to manifest. Taking this into account, there are some indications that can come to light in both cases and they are:

1 To begin with, the symptoms of diabetes can manifest as a need to eat and large or unusual weight loss . By not having enough insulin, the cells demand and send signals that they want sugar. So our feeling will be that we have an appetite. However, we will not gain weight and will tend to lose weight.

2 Wounds heal much slower than they should or may not heal at all (delayed wound healing).

3 Tiredness , weakness and fatigue when we have hardly done anything. This is because the absence of insulin does not drag glucose into the muscle.

4 It is also characterized by extremes. Suddenly, you are thirsty, hungry, and have an extreme urge to pee.

We can even find our limbs somewhat numb.

Other signs to recognize if you are diabetic

In addition, there are other secondary symptoms that can complete the primary ones and give us more signs that we may have diabetes. For example:

Nausea and vomiting.

Stomach ache.

Very deep and rapid breathing.

Very dry mouth and skin.

Sometimes there is also headache, nervousness, hunger, tremors, heavy sweating, bladder, kidney and skin infections and/or erectile dysfunction. If you think you may be diabetic but have not yet been diagnosed with the disease, it is advisable to go to the doctor as soon as possible
