Food is not only a vital necessity, it can also be a pleasure. However, the options for preparing a healthy and appetizing menu are reduced for those who suffer from problems such as allergies, intolerances or diabetes. If the latter is your case, you should know that you do not have to give up a complete diet, just know how to substitute some ingredients.
Diabetes is a metabolic disease that is caused by a malfunction of the hormone responsible for the production of insulin, causing hyperglycemia, a high level of sugar in the blood. Its most common symptoms are an increased need to urinate, drink and eat, but if you are pregnant you should also monitor the appearance of gestational diabetes, which disappears after giving birth but requires greater care.
Foods recommended in a diabetic diet
In a proper diet for diabetics, we must distinguish between three food groups: Those that are prohibited due to their high carbohydrate content, those that are not recommended, that can be taken occasionally and always under control of the rest of the diet, and those that have a beneficial to the body and therefore should be consumed regularly.
In the first group, the foods prohibited for diabetics, we find all those that contain refined sugar, cream, chocolate, industrial pastries… and also drinks such as sugary carbonated soft drinks or alcohol. In the second group, foods that are not recommended, all those that contain carbohydrates would enter: pasta, cereals, rice, red meats, sausages and fruits.
To balance the nutritional needs of your diet, you should consume more vegetables, white meat, fish and shellfish, and skimmed dairy products. It is also advisable to hydrate in abundance with water and juices (in moderation because they contain sugar), consume a lot of fiber and eat 5 or 6 meals a day so that digestion is easier, in addition to preventing the feeling of hunger from causing us to abuse food.
